When Kieran had said beach house, Henley had pictured… well, a beach house. Perhaps, something a little rustic and surrounded by houses exactly like it. Kieran’s beach house turned out to be a huge place set off by itself complete with private beach and dock. It was a good thing the place was in a secluded area because it was also more glass than not. As cold as it got in the wintertime, Henley couldn’t imagine trying to heat the place. That thought alone made him realize exactly how far such a place was out of his reach.

As much as Kieran seemed at home in luxury, Kieran also struck Henley as more down to earth than the high-ticket properties he owned. The conundrum made him curious. “This place is beautiful, but for some reason, it’s not something I see you buying.”

Kieran looked around as if he’d never thought about it. He shrugged. “It belonged to my parents. When they died, it passed to Gannon and me. They used to bring us here, and I guess we just kept coming without thinking much about it.”

He’d known Kieran’s parents had passed several years earlier, but he’d never questioned the other man. Now that Kieran brought it up, Henley wanted to know all there was to know. “I remember you saying they’d died several years ago, but you didn’t say how or how old you were.”

Kieran tossed the folded clothes in his hands into the dresser and gave Henley his full attention. “I was a month away from nineteen and in my freshman year at Harvard. They were two of the over eighteen hundred people killed in hurricane Katrina. If you’d known them, you wouldn’t be surprised. They were too stubborn to evacuate. They were too hardheaded to ever listen to anyone else.”

“Damn. Gannon must’ve been really young. How did he survive?”

A humorless laugh escaped Kieran. “Steele’s don’t raise their children. The best boarding schools do. He was here at Deerfield Academy. Of course, the moment it was only the two of us, I pulled him out, and we lived here until it was safe to return home to New Orleans. He was ten, and it should’ve been hard as hell. I realize that now, but Gannon has always been angelic. Teachers love him. I love him. Hell, everyone who meets him loves him. He’s always been so quiet and independent. It’s like he isn’t around even when he is, but I miss him when he’s not.” A rueful smile touched Kieran’s lips. Henley realized something monumental. Kieran only truly smiled when it came to Gannon. It seemed ridiculous to be jealous of the man’s brother, but he couldn’t help it. It was as if Kieran reserved all his love for the younger version of him.

A low tap sounded on the door, drawing their attention that way. Gannon stood inside the doorway, looking unsure of his welcome. “Hey guys, I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

One thing was certain, Gannon was easy to love. Henley lost his jealousy at the first sight of Gannon.
